How to Get Roofing Leads After a Hail Storm: The 72-Hour Playbook
A hail storm is not a lead source. It is a starting gun. The contractors who win a hail-struck neighborhood are almost never the ones with the best marketing — they are the ones who knocked first, and knocked on the right doors.
Here is what actually happens after a significant hail event. Within 24 hours, out-of-state storm chasers arrive with rented trucks and door-knockers. Within 72 hours, the best streets are saturated. Within two weeks, the homeowners who were going to file a claim have mostly filed one — with somebody. If you are still waiting on referrals at that point, the storm has already passed you by.

Hour 0–6: Verify the swath before you burn a tank of gas
The single most expensive mistake in storm restoration is canvassing the wrong streets. Hail does not fall evenly. A storm reported as "golf-ball hail in Henry County" might have produced a damaging core only three miles wide, and the difference between being inside and outside that core is the difference between a 30% contact-to-inspection rate and near zero.
Before anyone leaves the shop, you want three facts:
- Where the damaging core actually tracked. NOAA/NWS storm reports and radar-derived hail swaths give you a far tighter polygon than the county-level news report.
- Estimated stone size by area. Sub-1" hail rarely produces claimable shingle damage on newer roofs. 1.25"+ almost always does. This single number determines whether a street is worth your day.
- Roof age in the affected polygon. A 4-year-old architectural shingle roof and an 18-year-old three-tab roof hit by identical hail produce completely different claim outcomes.
If you only change one thing about your storm response, make it this: stop canvassing by county and start canvassing by verified swath. It is the highest-leverage decision in the entire process.
Hour 6–24: Prioritize streets, not addresses
Once you know the polygon, rank inside it. Not all damaged streets are equal, and your crew's day is finite. Sort by a combination of:
- Hail size × roof age. The highest-probability claims sit where the biggest stones met the oldest roofs.
- Roof pitch and material. Steeper roofs and softer materials bruise more readily and photograph more convincingly for an adjuster.
- Density. Forty homes on one cul-de-sac beats forty homes spread over nine miles. Drive time is margin.
- Neighbor effect. One approved claim on a street makes the next eight conversations dramatically easier. Prioritize streets where you can plant a flag and a yard sign.
The goal is a route, not a list. Your crew should never be deciding where to go next while standing in a driveway.
Hour 24–72: Contact, and lead with the roof — not the claim
Storm-chaser reputation is the tax every honest roofer pays. Homeowners in a hail-struck neighborhood have already been knocked twice today by someone who opened with "you can get a free roof."
Do not open there. Open with something specific and verifiable:
"Your street took 1.5-inch hail on Tuesday around 4pm. We're inspecting roofs on this block. It's free, it takes about twenty minutes, and I'll show you photos of whatever I find — whether or not there's anything worth filing on."
Three things make that work. It is specific (a date, a time, a stone size — you clearly did homework). It is local (you are on their block, not calling from three states away). And it concedes the possibility of no damage, which is the single fastest way to separate yourself from a chaser.
What to do with the inspection
Photograph everything, including undamaged slopes. Document stone strike patterns, soft metals (gutters, vents, flashing — these bruise visibly and are excellent corroborating evidence), and granular loss. Give the homeowner the photos regardless of outcome. The roofer who sends a homeowner a clear report saying "you don't have a claim" is the roofer they call in three years when they do.
Day 3–14: The follow-up is the business
Most roofing companies lose more revenue to weak follow-up than to weak canvassing. A homeowner who says "let me talk to my spouse" is not a no — they are a 40% close if you follow up twice and a 5% close if you follow up never.
Build a cadence and hold to it:
- Same day: photo report by email or text, while the conversation is warm.
- Day 2: a short check-in — "any questions about the photos?"
- Day 5: the neighbor proof — "we're doing three roofs on your street, here's the schedule."
- Day 10: the deadline nudge — most carriers limit how long after a storm you can file.
None of this requires clever copy. It requires that the follow-up actually happens, on time, for every single inspection — which is a systems problem, not a sales problem.

- Canvassing by county. You burn a week of crew time outside the damaging core and conclude "this storm was weak." The storm was fine. Your polygon was wrong.
